Philippines –  Papua New Guinea Alumni Regional Study Tour

MEfDA facilitated a visit by a delegation from the Philippines to Papua New Guinea to learn about women’s led enterprises in resource rich host communities. The study tour team met with government, industry and private sector to learn about how to support women as entrepreneurs.

In celebration of International Women’s Day (IWD), March 8, with the theme this year #PledgeForParity, MEfDA invited the Mining and Energy for Development community to submit photos (selfies) with their #PledgeForParity card. One hundred and seven photos were received from 26 countries featuring 150 people with a total of 114 combined pledges.

EITI Global Conference and Alumni Event

On the sidelines of the Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (EITI) global conference in Peru in February, MEfDA held a Dinner & Dialogue on the theme of “Implementing the EITI Standard, informing policy dialogue, improving government and company practice”. Alumni and invited guests participated in discussions on key issues of transparency of information and how it informs policy for inclusive socio-economic development from the extractive sector.

Emerging Leaders in Africa Mining Program

The third Emerging Leaders in Africa Mining Program was delivered in Cape Town alongside the Investing in African Mining Indaba. It involved a group of over 20 emerging leaders from across African governments, civil society organisations, academia and industry. Attendees participated in a week of specific leadership training followed by a week of engagement with stakeholders at the African Mining Indaba, one of the largest global mining conferences. The program was supported by the African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) and The African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP), The European Union (EU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) programme on Development Minerals.

Papua New Guinea Mining and Energy for Development Alumni Forum

The Papua New Guinea Mining and Energy Alumni Forum with the theme “Multi-stakeholder dialogue and collaboration in mining and energy for development: practical experiences and outcomes” brought together over 30 Papua New Guinean Alumni to share practical experiences on resource estimation, royalties, community readiness and alluvial mining. Ms Hakaua Harry, Secretary, Department of National Planning and Monitoring gave the keynote in which she spoke about PNG’s development plan.

Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) Conference

The winners of the M4DLink Between mining and farming photo competition were funded to attend the ‘Between the pick and the plough’ Conference on ASM at Australian National University in Canberra, along with two other MEfDA alumni working in this field. The winners, Omar Pidani from Indonesia and Professor Carmelita Martinez from the Philippines, both presented their posters outlining their work with ASM communities to an appreciative audience.

Executive Leadership in the Extractive Sector Short Course

MEfDA delivered a two day program supporting current and future generations of Papua New Guinean leaders, to consider public policy challenges and opportunities in the extractives sector. The program brought together a mix of public servants, along with key industry players, land owner and state owned enterprise representatives.

High level representation through 20 senior government and industry presenters shared current and practical insights and experience which provided participants direct access to leaders and decision makers in the sector

It was supported by the Australian Governments in partnership with ExxonMobil PNG.

MEfDA hosted a visit from the Mongolian Ministry of Mining when they visited Perth. The delegation included the State Secretary of the Ministry of Mining. They were interested learning about Australia’s experience in managing the social and environmental issues related to mining industry.

Kenya Mining for Development  Alumni Forum

MEfDA in conjunction with the Australia High Commission, Kenya, Australia Awards Africa, and the Kenyan Alumni Local Coordinating Committee organised the Kenya Mining for Development Alumni Forum. Over 30 Kenyan Alumni gathered to share lessons on the theme “Building inclusive partnerships in extractives for sustainable development.”
