Executive Leadership in the Extractive Sector Short Course

MEfDA delivered a two day program supporting current and future generations of Papua New Guinean leaders, to consider public policy challenges and opportunities in the extractives sector. The program brought together a mix of public servants, along with key industry players, land owner and state owned enterprise representatives.

High level representation through 20 senior government and industry presenters shared current and practical insights and experience which provided participants direct access to leaders and decision makers in the sector

It was supported by the Australian Governments in partnership with ExxonMobil PNG.

MEfDA hosted a visit from the Mongolian Ministry of Mining when they visited Perth. The delegation included the State Secretary of the Ministry of Mining. They were interested learning about Australia’s experience in managing the social and environmental issues related to mining industry.

Kenya Mining for Development  Alumni Forum

MEfDA in conjunction with the Australia High Commission, Kenya, Australia Awards Africa, and the Kenyan Alumni Local Coordinating Committee organised the Kenya Mining for Development Alumni Forum. Over 30 Kenyan Alumni gathered to share lessons on the theme “Building inclusive partnerships in extractives for sustainable development.”

UN Women Regional Sharefair on Gender Equality in the Extractive Industry

The winners of the M4DLink Gender and Extractives Photo Competition attended the UN Women Regional Sharefair on Gender Equality in the Extractive Industry. MEfDA had a stall at the Sharefair that displayed the winning pictures from Georgette Barnes on women’s voice in decision-making, leadership, and peace-building and Eulalie Tanteliniony and Monica Mosha on women’s economic empowerment.

Minerals and Energy for Development Alliance sponsored academics from three universities in Zambia and Mozambique to present on “Strategies for addressing challenges facing mining schools” at the regional conference of the Society of Mining Professors.

Sustainable Mining Workshop

Sustainable Mining Workshop

In collaboration with Austrade and the Australian Embassy in Hanoi, MEfDA organised a two day workshop on Sustainable Mining Practices for Vietnamese stakeholders. The workshop was based around the Australian Government’s Leading Practice in Sustainable Development in Mining Program, and was facilitated by Professor David Mulligan from UQ’s SMI Centre of Mined Land Rehabilitation and Professor David Laurence from UNSW’s Centre for Sustainable Mining Practices. It involved a total of 20 participants from government, industry and civil society, and was followed by a half-day workshop with Vietnamese government officials focussed on regulatory frameworks and processes for environmental protection.
